802.11 DCF Denial of Service Vulnerabilities

چکیده
Abstract This paper addresses denial of service vulnerabilities (DOS) in 802.11 wireless LANs that arise from the 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF). We demonstrate that the DCF is vulnerable to equivalent DOS attacks at both the MAC and PHY layers. Denial of service attacks against the DCF are easily staged by a single adversary and affect both infrastructure and mobile ad hoc networks. These attacks are very effective and there are no workable counter-measures when using the standard MAC protocol. When staged by a shrewd adversary these denial of service attacks reveal little information about the attacker and provide almost no forensic evidence. We have demonstrated that 802.11 wireless LANs are particularly vulnerable to denial of service attacks and should not be used where availability is essential. This paper addresses denial of service vulnerabilities (DOS) in 802.11 wireless LANs that arise from the 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF). Denial of Service Attacks against 802.11 Dcf
This paper investigates the vulnerabilities in the 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) mechanisms. We have conducted a series of Denial of Service (DoS) attack experiments targeting at the 802.11 DCF and evaluated the effectiveness of such attacks on different configurations. The results show that any current or upcoming 802.11 standards would not provide adequate help to mitigate th...

The upcoming 802.11w amendment to the 802.11 standard eliminates the 802.11 deauthentication and disassociation Denial of Service (DoS) vulnerabilities. This paper presents two other DoS vulnerabilities: one vulnerability in draft 802.11w implementations discovered by IEEE 802.11 TGw, and one new vulnerability in 802.11, which is still present in the 802.11w amendment. Attacks exploiting the fi...
متن کامل802.11 Denial-of-Service Attacks: Real Vulnerabilities and Practical Solutions
The convenience of 802.11-based wireless access networks has led to widespread deployment in the consumer, industrial and military sectors. However, this use is predicated on an implicit assumption of confidentiality and availability. While the security flaws in 802.11’s basic confidentially mechanisms have been widely publicized, the threats to network availability are far less widely apprecia...
متن کاملCharacterization of Service Times Burstiness of IEEE 802.11 DCF
First order metrics (throughput, average delay) of the IEEE 802.11 DCF MAC protocol have been extensively analyzed. The service process of the same protocol has not received the same attention, although it is known that it might be bursty. We develop a simple and accurate Markov model that allows a complete characterization of the service process of an 802.11 BSS. A major result of simulations ...
متن کاملProviding Quality of Service in the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function
Wireless networks are becoming more and more common in today’s networking environment. One of the earliest of the IEEE standards for wireless networks is the IEEE 802.11 standard. Most communications in an 802.11 network use the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF). Unfortunately, the 802.11 DCF was not designed with Quality of Service (QoS) in mind. However, as more and more applications te...
